LOVE! Have you ever been asked to die for someone you didn’t know; who hasn’t even been born? For an untold number of people destined to be sinners? Were you ever asked to suffer humiliation and betrayal just so those same sinners could have life eternal and peace that passes all understanding? If you were asked, would you do so? God asked His only Son, Jesus Christ, to do all that for us, and he did it willingly. What pain God must have suffered, knowing that His only Son would have to endure physical, mental, and emotional anguish to save those sinners. LOVE! “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 When I think of the magnitude of a Love so selfless, I am overwhelmed. We all love our children, and I can’t even begin to imagine having to send them into a place where they would be hurt and betrayed, knowing they would die; but God did that for you and me. What have we ever done to deserve such love? There is nothing we could do to deserve such love. “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 A wreath of thorns was pushed down on his head. Jesus carried a heavy wooden cross through the streets, while the people gathered there mocked him, and Pilate’s soldiers spat on him. Up that steep hill called Mt. Calvary he trudged. At the top stood 3 crosses. The cross in the middle was for our Jesus. Nails were pounded into his hands and feet to secure him on the cross. His persecutors lifted the cross with Jesus on it and let it drop into a hole to be anchored in the ground. The robe he was clad in was pulled away. Two thieves hung on crosses on either side of Jesus. One, sensing the reality of Christ, asked Jesus to remember him when He arrived at His Kingdom. Jesus assured the man that he would, indeed, be with him in Paradise. As Jesus was passing from life to death, he asked his Father to forgive those who were crucifying him. “Then said Jesus, Father forgive them; for they know not what they do.” St. Luke 23:24 IF THAT ISN’T LOVE By Bill Gaither He left the splendor of Heaven, Knowing his destiny Was the lonely hill of Golgotha, There to lay down his live for me. If that isn’t love, Then the oceans are dry. There’re no stars in the sky, And the sparrows don’t fly. If that isn’t love, Then heaven’s a myth. There’s no feeling like this, If that isn’t love. Even in death, he remembered The thief hanging by his side, And he spoke with love and compassion, Then he took him to Paradise. If that isn’t love, Then the oceans are dry. There’re no stars in the sky, And the sparrows don’t fly. If that isn’t love, Then heaven’s a myth. There’s no feeling like this, If that isn’t love. He left the splendor of Heaven, Knowing his destiny Was the lonely hill of Golgotha, There to lay down his live for me.
